April 28th

The Reserves entertained Stillington with an early Saturday morning ko and won 3-2. James Aked gave Hemingbrough the lead but shortly after the break they found themselves trailing 2-1 before Mike Young levelled and Harry Jackson hit the winner. On Monday evening they travelled over to Church Fenton and won 5-3 to guarantee finishing in fourth place in the league. That man Harry Jackson hit a hat-trick with Andy Edwards and yet another goal from James Aked to seal a win over White Horse. The Reserves wrap up their season with a home tie against Ouseburn.

 29th April

Hemingbrough 7 Shoulder of Mutton 3

In Matty Zac and Matty Woods last game in charge of the Hemingbrough Sunday side, rather than fizzing out with a meaningless game, FUN was the word of the day. With all the players’ names and all the available positions put into separate hats, an unusual looking side stepped out onto the pitch.

Nick Brown was given the Captains armband for his last game with the Sunday side before he heads into semi retirement and also took his place up front, with Matty Williams securing the prized goalkeeper jersey.

The game could have turned into a farce and a heavy defeat, but the Hemingbrough players were determined to prove to themselves they could play well in their new found positions, and within 20 minutes found themselves 1-0 up, With Kevin Kozicki tapping in from close range after good work by Collins.

Shoulder could have levelled soon after but for a brilliant one handed save from Williams. Shortly before the break though they did get a deserved equaliser.

A change in formation and positions at half time some what lifted Hemingbrough into a higher gear, with a back three of Kozicki Luke Zacharenko and Craig Haythorne providing the foundations at the back.

Boro found themselves 2-1 up shortly after the break, a Harry Jackson effort seemed to be heading over the line, but for Nick Brown to do a “Nugent” tapping it in from close range. To start a scene of celebration.

Hemingbrough secured a 3 goal lead within a couple of minutes, with a brace from Matty Wood.

Mutton managed to reduce the deficit soon after, Williams made another brilliant save but unfortunately the mutton attacker bundled the rebound over the line to make it 4-2

Harry Jackson then made it 5-2 with a brilliant team goal, a run of 10 passes created space for Jackson who finished from close range.

Mutton already relegated never gave up the fight though and found themselves back in the game shortly after, despite the young trio at the back mopping up most things thrown at them, Williams was not given a chance as the ball was crashed home from 6 yards out.

Boro killed off any hope of a Mutton fight back as a well worked cross from man of the match Richy Collins, was bundled into the net by Oli Falkingham, his first goal of the season, the celebrations that followed were slightly disturbing though as Falkingham unleashed his so called “guns” by pealing off his shirt, although the beer gut and man boobs look to have replaced them.

There was time for Manager Matty Zacharenko to have a proper send off too, as Hemingrough were awarded a direct free kick 25 yards out from goal, which he curled around the world into the very top corner of the goal to claim the goal of the day, the hemingbrough players still couldn’t quite believe it had gone in! especially as Zacharenko hasn’t scored for the Sunday side in 4 years!!

With the 7-3 scorline securing their highest placed finish in Division 2 for some time, Zacharenko and Wood look back on what could have been, with a bit off commitment and a bit of luck they could well have finished in the top 2 and won promotion to division 1. for the incoming manager, if he can keep hold of the majority of the current squad there is no reason boro can’t be in that top 2 come end of next season, an announcent on the managerial vacancy is due shortly with 2 candidates ready to put there names forward.

Midweek and sat - sun

TADCASTER ALBION 1 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 3

The midweek trip to second in the table Tadcaster Albion was always going to be a daunting task for Hemingbrough, especially considering that in all competitions Tadcaster were defending an unbeaten run of 23 matches.

Danny Young and Harry Jackson won the early aerial battles and Craig Haythorne and Adi Wood were quickly demonstrating the pace and trickery down the flanks. The hosts were rocked with a double whammy as they conceded two goals in very quick succession, firstly Danny Smith floated over an inch perfect ball for Luke Zacharenko to run onto and after controlling the ball with minimum effort, he duly planted the ball into the bottom corner. Shortly afterwards Craig Haythorne worked the ball down the flank with the help of Olly Falkingham and Haythornes cross was met by Smith who headed Hemingbrough into a two goal lead.

After the break the Hemingbrough keeper, who was virtually a spectator during the first half, was called upon to produce a series of brilliant saves to deny the home side. With five minutes remaining Tadcaster reduced the deficit with a penalty and shortly afterwards Mark Mabbett was summoned from the bench to make his debut for the club, replacing the defensive stalwart Matty Zacharekno.

Mabbett showed his vast experience to instantly repel another Taddy attack and at the same time he was able to send Smith away to create the vital third goal. Smiths marauding run finished with a square ball to Luke Zacharenko who confirmed the win in clinical style.

The season finished on a low note following the excellent mid week victory, as Hemingbrough went down 1-0 at Huby. A dour game was settled with a first half goal but after the game Manager Singh reflected on his first season as Manager

paying special tribute to the contributions from youngsters Craig Haythorne and Luke Zacharenko.

The Reserves slim chance of promotion totally disappeared as they could only draw 1-1 at home to Fulford Utd, James Aked scoring for the fourth game on the bounce and on Saturday they were beaten 2-1 at Ouseburn, Daz Tate hitting the Brough goal. On Monday evening Hemingbrough fell behind to an early goal at Fulford but strikes from the Caudwell brothers, Tom and Chris and a late goal for Sub Matty Aked saw Hemingbrough win 3-1.

The Sunday side should have avoided the drop following their 1-1 draw with Cue Ball Fulford Utd.

 From 14th & 15th April

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 1 ROSE & CROWN 2

Hemingbrough’s F1 Racing Sunday Morning League Division Two status hangs by a thread after they went down 2-1 at home to fellow strugglers Rose & Crown and that proverbial thread was stretched further by a contentious refereeing decision deep into stoppage time, which allowed the visitors a last gasp winner.

Brough started brightly with Harry Jackson causing problems on the wing with some trademarks turns and they should really have been three goals up within the opening 10 minute period as Jackson, Luke Zacharenko and Craig Haythorne all went close. Despite all the early pressure and possession the Brough found themselves trailing after the half hour mark following a freak mistake from keeper Brown, his clearance cannoned-off a Rose & Crown player and the ball dropped into the unguarded goal.

At the interval Hemingbrough were forced to make changes due to injuries and fatigue, but this did change the pattern of the game as the hosts continued to create chances with the inspirational Matty Williams and Zacharenko. With ten minutes remaining and Hemingbrough lamenting the many missed scoring opportunities, their fortunes changed, the Harry Jackson turn deceived two visiting defenders and his charge towards their goal was only interrupted with an ugly challenge. The resulting penalty was serendipitously planted into the bottom corner of the net by Luke Zacharenko as he nurtures his record of never missing from the penalty spot whilst wearing a Hemingbrough shirt.

As the scored stood, Rose & Crown would go down and Hemingbrough would be save and the visitors aware of the situation threw everything and everybody forward. With only seconds remaining Rose & Crown managed to find the winner with a simple tap-in from close range but how the player was not adjudged to be off-side will remain a mystery to the Hemingbrough players for ever and a day.

Hemingbrough still need to win one of their remaining two games or alternatively for Rose & Crown to lose their last remaining game for the Brough to stay up.

The Reserves notched up their second successive away win with the 2-0 defeat of Stillington to keep alive their very slim chances of promotion. James Aked and Tom Caudwell were both on the score sheet for the second successive game.

Reports from 7th & 8th April

Hemingbrough 0 v Ozbaldwick 6

A somewhat depleted Hemingbrough first team where in the end, no match for the current Division Two League leaders Osbaldwick at the week-end eventually going down 6-0.

Whilst Manager Richie Singh can, and rightly so, point to the fact that not one of his back four from the previous week was available for one of the most difficult fixtures of the season, he also conceded that whilst a full strength Hemingbrough side would have been a different proposition they would have been stretched to contain a lively and organised unit like Osbaldwick.

The visitors, who have dropped just eight points all season, took their chances well and quickly put the game beyond Hemingbrough hitting four goals in the first half and though Hemingbrough had the better of the second period, the O’s add a further two goals.

Hemingbrough 2nd 9 v Civilk Service 2

The Reserves returned to winning ways after a run of four games without a win, as they easily beat a poor Civil Service side. That said, you can only beat what is in front of you and Hemingbrough, especially in the second half, destroyed the opposition with an abundance of panache. For the record Tom Jackson hit a hat-trick( he also hit a brace in the reverse fixture) and their were goals for the Aked brothers, Matty and James and likewise for the Caudwell brothers Tom and Chris and the rout was completed with goals from Jon Falkingham and Mark Livsey as Hemingbrough won 9-2. Hemingbrough have now beaten Civil Service in their last six meetings and Livo has scored in the last four of those games.

The Sunday side earned a creditable point from a 2-2 draw with visitors Deramore Arms. Hemingbrough’s goals came from Mark Livsey and the ever reliable Matty Williams but the point won was in no small way due to an accomplished performance from the recalled “Eggy”, who turned back the years and showed he had NOT gained any of his former pace (what pace?) but produced a colossus of a defensive game which displayed his authority, ability and above all, his commitment to the cause.

The fact that he ached from head to foot on Monday was totally irrelevant.

Reports from 31st March and 1st April

Hemingbrough 3 v Selby Brassa 1

Hemingbrough went into this game still missing first team regulars Dave Young and Nathan Briggs, and with the 2nd team having no game both Steve Irvine and Danny Young were selected to start.

Brassa settled the quicker and passed the ball with assured confidence in the early exchanges and both Matty Williams and Andy Jones tested Keeper Steve Milner. Williams was a constant threat as he dropped off into midfield in an attempt to get the ball, and it took a while for Matty Zak and Irvine to control his fording runs.

Hemingbrough though made the vital breakthrough midway through the half and to be fair it was totally against the run of play. Nick Brooks lobbed a hopeful ball up field but Stuart Briggs mis-read the bounce to leave Danny Smith 1 on 1 with the keeper. Smith kept his cool before nonchalantly stroking the ball home. Moments later and Briggs again let the ball bounce over his head but this time Luke Zak was denied a goal after a great last ditched challenge from Sykes. Heminbrough were now rampant and from the resulting corner Matty Zak’s clever movement found him space, but he hit his effort high and wide from an acute angle.

16 year old Luke Zak was growing in confidence by the minute and showed maturity beyond his years when he broke free down the left only to find the opposition box vacant. He duly held the ball up before hitting a pin-point cross to the re juvenated Craig Haythorne to volley back across goal for a delighted Steve Harrison to head home.

The second period was a more one sided affair as Brassa, with the wind up there backs piled on the pressure, but again the host broke on the counter attack and Luke misplaced shot fell to Danny Smith who had no trouble adding to his tally from 4 yards out. Brassa manager Steve Curry then made a couple of changes in an attempt to get his side back in the game with Scouse and Jason Chalkey entering the fray. The later used his experience to calm the game down and his pin point passing nearly found Paul Stephenson, but Matty Zak read the situation and cleared his lines. Hemingbrough then broke again, as Harry Jackson and Young combined down the right. Youngs pass found Haythorne but Luke Zak could only head wide for his cross.

At the other end it was all hands to the pump and the last 4 minutes of the game exploded into life when sub Ozi Falkingham was adjudged to have up-ended Jones. Brassa top Scorer Williams Calmly sent Milner the wrong way for the resulting penalty to reduce arrears. Curry then pushed defender Sykes up front and Singh counter acted this by bring himself on to man mark him. It was to prove a frantic last four minutes as Brassa won a host of free kicks and Williams, Jones and Stephenson were all denied by a combination of Milner and some brave defending By Matty Zak, Brooks and Irvine.

Matty Zak was voted players man of the match, with Steve Harrison taking the Mangers Vote.

A mentally exhausted Singh commented after the game “Brassa had the lion share of possession but we took our chances and defending brilliantly, it’s as simple as that

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 6 WHITE HORSE CHURCH FENTON 2

Hemingbrough achieved their first maximum haul against White Horse in six meetings with the Church Fenton side with a polished performance which, with a bit more luck could well have seen the hosts hit double figures.

Both sides were without their first choice keeper but it was clear from the outset that Nick Brown, the Boro replacement, was more adept in the role than his opposite number at the other end of the pitch and Hemingbrough sensed that they needed to exploit this weakness quickly. Within three minutes Adi Wood duly obliged, finishing off a flowing move with a tremendous drive which even their normal guardian of the goal would not have saved and they should have doubled their lead shortly afterwards but Woods effort troubled Billy Foster more than it did the visiting keeper, Hemingbrough were now playing some confident football with Steve Harrison at the heart of everything but they failed to put away the half dozen chances they created and just before the break gifted Steve Sutton an equaliser for the visitors.

Early into the second half Steve Harrison stamped his authority on the game as he twice created the time and space before precisely planting the ball into the bottom corner. His midfield partner, Harry Jackson, cleverly made the fourth with an inch perfect ball for Wood to double his tally for the afternoon and four quickly became five when the smallest player on the field, Craig Haythorne rose to head home from close range. By now Hemingbrough had introduced all their subs into the game and Pearson almost marked his entrance with a goal but his effort off his thigh went just wide but White Horse sub Lee Streetton had better luck as he reduced the arrears. Late on in the game Tom “Adi Akenbyi” Jackson ran through on goal but was brought down and his dismay led to a small Ting Tong before order was restored. From the resulting free kick Nick Brooks immaculate cross was headed home by Luke Zacharenko to complete the scoring.

The Reserves promotion hopes took another jolt as they were beaten 4-2 by Heslington. The Sunday side were due to entertain Shoulder of Mutton in a re-arranged fixture but the visitors were unable to raise a side, the original game should have been played last month but for some reason they did not fancy a trip out to Hemingbrough then either and could not raise a team then.

 From 17th & 18th March

OSBALDWICK 2 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 0

Osbaldwick, one of the pre-season favourites for at least some silverware this season, came out of the starting blocks at a blistering pace. Admittedly they did have a strong driving wind in their favour and having been knocked out of two cup competitions in as many weeks, promotion is now their only avenue for success this season.

Their intentions were clear from the start and only a brilliant save from Steve Milner as he turned the ball round the post denied the hosts a goal with their first shot. However from the resulting corner, the Divisions top goal scorer and as Manager Richie Singh remonstrated with his defenders, the smallest player on the pitch, Paul Crangle was allowed to ghost into the box and volley the ball home almost unnoticed and within minutes the same player had doubled the hosts lead. The first half was certainly Osbaldwick’s and but for some determined defending from Nick Brooks, Matty Zacharenko and Steve Irvine the damage could have been beyond repair.

With the elements to Hemingbrough’s advantage they did show some glimpses of hope, Adi Woods pace and the hardworking Luke Zacharenko created the occasional chance and as the game progressed Hemingbrough did improve as the momentum and confidence grew and both Jackson and Smith saw chances denied by the home keeper. Richie Singh was quick to concede after the game that on the day the better side won and had it not been for some great keeping from Milner, the score-line could have been much worse. Osbaldwick and Tadcaster are easily the best in teams in the league Singh added.

HUBY UTD RES 2 HEMINGBROUGH UTD RES 2

Hemingbrough battled hard in the first 20 mins to contain the home side who had the advantage of playing with the strong wind at their backs. Huby grabbed a couple of goals three minutes either side of the half hour mark but this jolt inspired Hemingbrough , led by Man of the Match Danny Young, to raise their game.

After a succession of corners Richie Collins produced a pin-point cross for John Falkingham to volley home and the second half saw Hemingbrough take the initiative. Despite having the wind at their backs Hemingbrough’s only success in the second period was a Mark Livsey corner which floated serenely into the top corner. Hemingbrough needed the three points to maintain a serious challenge for promotion but a draw was a fair reflection of the game.

DERAMORE 4 HEMINGBROUGH 4

Hemingbrough were denied three very vital points as the hosts grabbed an equaliser with virtually the last touch of the game. That said though, they would have probably been happy with a point just fifteen minutes into the game as they lost their keeper with a hamstring injury.

Skipper Matty Williams gave Hemingbrough an early lead but the lack of understanding in the Brough defence due to the keeper injury allowed the home side back on level terms before the break and they then took the lead early in the second half. Matty Wood restored parity for Hemingbrough only for Deramore to re-take the lead again but Hemingbrough refused to lie down and two goals from Luke Zacharenko fired Hemingbrough in front. With more than 20 minutes left the home side were showing signs of desperation as their keeper came up for the corners but Hemingbrough and stand-in keeper Matty Zacharenko appeared to have passed the test…… until the final second of the game.

Reports from Sat 10th & Sun 11th

The Reserves lost for the second week running as they were beaten 3-0 at home to their counterparts from Riccall. The defeat drops Hemingbrough down to sixth in the league though they still have at least three games in hand on some of the sides above them, but if the Brough are to have any serious involvement in the promotion race then they must return to winning ways quickly. Two goals from Hollis Bills and Johnny Barnitt’s eighth goal of the season saw Riccall take maximum points in the derby game which keeps Riccall in second place.

The Sunday side lost by a single goal in their home match wth Pocklington.

MOOR LANE 0 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 3

With Hemingbrough’s Manager allegedly away on a scouting mission with a party including Richie Collins (who incidentally is due to get married shortly) Assistant Manager Harry Jackson took over the reigns for the day.

Hemingbrough began with purpose and went close early on through Adie Wood and Jackson and it was no surprise when the ‘Brough took a deserved lead. Luke Zacharenko worked the ball down the right and his cross found Steve Harrison lurking just outside the box and he hit a venomous drive in to the bottom corner. This should have been the incentive Hemingbrough needed to push home their advantage but the home side showed why they have scored in every league home game since October 2004 by severely testing the Brough but solid defending from Matty Zacharenko, Milner and Man of the Match Steve “Crocodile Hunter” Irvine and the class and authority of Harrison and Jackson was to prove pivotal on the day. The nearest they came to scoring was from a corner which was flicked on by Zacharenko Snr who then looked on in horror as the ball headed towards the top corner but his blushes were saved by an inspirational goal line clearance by Oli Falkingham.

The all-important second goal arrived just after the hour mark, a Hemingbrough free kick 25 yds out and Luke Zacharenko replicated the infamous “Ronaldinho lob over David Seaman”, the Moor Lane keeper could only watch and admire as the ball finished in the top corner. Brough were buoyant now and following a quickly taken free kick from Danny Smith, Falkingham ghosted down the right before producing an inch perfect cross for Zacharenko to head home into the top corner with an unstoppable header to double his tally for the afternoon.

YORK F1 RACING SUNDAY MORNING LEAGUE

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 4 ACOMB CELTIC 2

In Nathan Briggs last game for the team before his 6 week jaunt around Australia, Hemingbrough were keen for a win against second in the table Acomb Celtic.

However things did not go plan early on and within 10 mins they found themselves a goal down, but, before the break they did get back on level terms when a corner from skipper Matty Williams was met sweetly by Briggs and his header rocketed into the back of the net to start a crescendo of over-elaborate celebrations from Briggs, much to amusement of everyone present. The Hemingbrough mood was tempered later as Paul “Anderton” Shah sustained another injury just before the break.

Hemingbrough started the second period in the same way that had the first, by conceding a goal within the first ten minutes, but this prompted co-manager Mathew Wood to revert to a 4-4-2 which quickly reaped rewards for Hemingbrough. A sublimely executed pass by Ozi Falkingham was met by Luke Zacharenko who was then brought down inside the box and he took the resulting penalty in his usual confident manner to chalk up his eighth successful spot kick of the current campaign. At this point the game could have gone either way, Brown made a number of top drawer saves to deny the visitors whilst at the other end of the field Oli Riach hit the Acomb post. Hemingbrough took the lead for the first time in the game with a quality finish from Luke Zacharenko after he had ran at the opposition before unleashing an absolute screamer from 30yds, Acomb were now chasing the game and left themselves exposed at the back which Luke Zacharenko capitalised upon as he set up Oli Riach to drill the ball home to clinch an important three points.

For the Hemingbrough Res it was “ just a very very bad day at the office” , they took the lead with a superb Matty Clark lob and then shortly afterwards conceded a penalty which Matty Milburn produced a brilliant save to deny Heslington an equaliser. After that it seemed everything went banana shaped as they conceded a hatful of goals to suffer their heaviest defeat in recent times, and the home keeper had an excellent display

Reports from Sat 24th & Sun 25th

The Reserves game at home to Ouseburn was postponed as was the Sunday sides trip to Fulford so none of the Club’s three sides kicked a ball at the week-end. This will undoubtedly create problems in April with mid-week matches, the Reserves are going to be affected more than the other two sides as they still have 12 games to play, which is more than half a seasons fixtures to cram into two months !!!!

LEEPR HARE LEAGUE DIVISION TWO

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 4 HUBY UTD 1

With four players unavailable and last weeks defeat still bugging him, Richie Singh rang the changes for the visit of a Huby side that had lost just once since the beginning of December. His plans were further disrupted on Saturday morning when both Steve Milner (flu) and Daz Tate (lost the van keys! ) pulled out of the game so it was fortunate that the Reserves were without a fixture and he was able to call upon several of their players.

The recent torrential rain made the fixture very doubtful and it was only due to the tireless work of groundsman Kev Jackson that the pitch was declared fit. Both Steve Harrison and Luke Zacharenko missed last weeks game and they were quick to make an impression with the latter setting up a good chance for Harrison but his effort just grazed the wrong side of the bar. The signs were encouraging and Danny Smith caused more panic in the visitors defence but his shot was palmed away and then frantically scrambled to safety. Hemingbrough suffered another set back when player/manager Singh was carried off with a knee injury which may curtail his season prematurely and during the re-organisation the visitors took the lead when Huby’s Brogan finished off a well worked move from the left.

Hemingbrough re-grouped at the break with skipper Briggs call ing for a lift in the tempo and they duly obliged. Adi Wood was now a constant thorn in the Huby defence with his intelligent runs and precise distribution of the ball and Hemingbrough got the breakthrough their creative football had warranted as Man of the Match Matty Zacharenko headed in the equaliser after good work from brother Luke. Just as it appeared that they had turned the corner they incurred “a self inflicted set-back”, the normally mild-mannered Dave Tommo was sent off for over-zealously contesting a somewhat dubious linesman’s decision. Singh pushed Chris Caudwell out to the left and brought Danny Smith into mid-field and the balance of the team appeared unruffled. With less than 15 minutes left Hemingbrough got the rewards their brave attacking deserved, Smith collected a Wood cross before calmly slotting the ball past the outstretched keeper. Within two minutes Wood had given Hemingbrough the lead firing home from a very acute angle and with Huby in total disarray Craig Haythorne ghosted in to complete the scoring and wrap up a great team performance.

The Sunday sides fixture with The Shoulder of Mutton was called-off, at literally the last minute as the visitors considered that they had insufficient players on arrival at the ground. No doubt the League Management Committee will deal with this matter accordingly !!

Reports from Sat 10th and Sun 11th Feb

FULFORD UTD 4 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 1

After last weeks confident display it was quick return back to their bad habits as a combination of poor finishing and virtually none-existent marking at set pieces made the ultimate outcome very predictable.

Hemingbrough were forced to make two changes from the team last week with Matty Zacharenko and Danny Smith returning in place of Steve Harrison (work) and Danny Young (broken hand) respectively.

After a slow start the game sprung into life when Nick Brooks went on a marauding run down the right and his pin point cross was met by Danny Smith but his effort was palmed away only to fall into the path of the industrious Harry Jackson who made no mistake from close range. Their lead was however short-lived as Fulford’s Ratcliffe somewhat easily danced past the Hemingbrough defenders before calmly slotting the ball past Briggs.

The hosts went in front early into the second half heading home from a corner though their lead should also have been short livid but after doing the hard work in creating the chance Wood fired just wide. Within five minutes Fulford went further ahead when Ratcliffe grabbed his second of the day and despite workman-like performances from the midfield trio of Singh, Jackson and Steve Irvine, Darren Todd’s cross-cum-shot sealed the game five minutes from time in favour of the home side.

Hemingbrough’s manager Richie Singh will be without at least four players this week-end and will be able to call on some of the Reserves who are without a game on Saturday.

The Sunday side lost a seven goal thriller at Bishopthorpe, on target for Hemingbrough were Matty Williams, Luke Zacharenko and Kev Kozicki from the penalty spot

Report from Saturday 20th

Hemingbrough 1 v York Railway Institute 2

After a late pitch inspection this League 2 got the go ahead thanks to the efforts of grounds man Kevin Jackson.

In a effort to change the clubs fortunes on the pitch Manager Singh switch to a 3-5-2 formation, but the late call off of influence midfielder Danny Young, meant Singh was forced to field himself in midfield.

The enforsisi again was for a fast and furious start, and the home side duly obliged with Danny Smith and Luke Zak at the sharp end of the early possession.

The Recalled Milner steadied the back three with Matty Zak and Steve Harrison all looking composed on the ball and passing through midfield at every opportunity.

The host were playing some great football, and York R I were being given the run around in the first half, as Adi Wood, Nick Brooks and Dave Young found the forwards with consummate ease. Both Smith and Luke Zak had chances to open the scoring, but both missed the target when it seemed easier to score.

Despite there first half dominance, Hemngbrough went into the break all square.

The second half started in the same vain, with keeper Nathan Briggs a vitual spector and it seem only a matter of time until Hemingbrough took the lead.

But as in recent weeks they dropped their guard and let York in. Dave Young was caught ball watching, and before he knew it he had let his opponent get goal side, the winger made no mistake as he calmly volleyed past the helpless Briggs.

Heminbrough to a man didn?t let this effect them and duly went up the other end and equalised within minutes. Man of the Match Harry Jackson went on a marauding run and after a intelligent one - two with Wood, he forced the keeper to turn his effort out for a corner. The resulting corner for Young was inch perfect and Milner rose to head home.

York then raised there game and it was now a very even contest and both team refused to settle for the draw and probed each other defence looking for the vital break through. At one end Matty Zak saw a effort rebound off the cross bar - while at the other end Milner stretched to turn a York effort onto the bar.

It seemed a draw was on the cards but yet again Heminbrough conceded a goal in the last 5 minutes as an unsighted Briggs could only watch as a thunderous effort went past his out-stretched hand. Late into Injury time the host should have claimed a draw, but Luke Zak effort was saved and his follow up was blazed over the bar.

After the match Assistant Manager Harry Jackson commented ?We would have been upset to draw that game but to lose is it devastating, we need to learn to take our chances. But on a positive note we are creating chances and we aren?t getting out played. I?m sure our next win isn?t far away?

Reports from Sat 13th andt Sun 14th Jan

The Reserve side lost the opportunity to put pressure on Reserve C league leaders when Hemingbrough’s game against bottom in the table Fulford was called off due to a flooded pitch. For the remaining two sides it was a week-end of penalty dramas and late, late goals, The First team travelled to Selby to take on local rivals Selby RSSC and took a first half lead with a Luke Zacharenko penalty but six minutes from time they conceded a penalty which ex-Hemingbrough player Matty Williams tucked away and deep into injury time the Selby side snatched the winner. For a full report of the game see Steve Curry’s report from Selby RSSC.

Fl Racing Sunday Morning League

HEMINGBROUGH 2 WIGGINGTON GRASSHOPPERS 3

Hemingbrough entertained league leaders Wiggington Grasshoppers just hours after the majority of the team attended Richard “Spooner” Irelands leaving night. “Spooner” has been a valued member of the Club for a number of years and we all wish him on his new adventure.

Unsurprisingly the visitors looked the brighter and were quickly in front following a set piece which finished with a header gliding over Brown in the home nets. This though ignited the starting fuse for Brough and they played some attractive football cumulating with a much deserved equaliser made and finished by the Zacharenkos, older brother Matty threading a through ball for brother Luke to latch onto and he produced a delicate chip to the beat the Wiggy keeper from 25 yds out. Just before the interval Hemingbrough conceded a highly contentious goal which included a couple of possible fouls in the build-up and a valid shout for off-side, but the goal stood.

Injuries to Matty Zak and Minto saw the introduction of Shah, and playing his first Sunday game of the season, Dave “God” Jackson who received his call-up call in the early hours of Sunday morning but who was to have a big impact on the game in very little time at all. Four minutes in fact, a well worked free kick resulted in a powerful header flying past Brown and despite the “Hand of God” the ball still finished in the back of the net. Strangely though the Ref disallowed the goal, awarded a penalty and showed the red card to Dave Jackson limiting his appearance to just 240 secs. It looked as though the “Hand” was to make an instrumental difference to the game as Wiggington blazed their penalty high and wide.

Down to 10 men Hemingbrough reverted to a 3-5-1 formation, and were back on level terms within 10 mins when Harry Jackson was bundled down in the box and though regular penalty taker Luke Zacharenko gave the job to Harry he duly sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 2-2. Hemingbrough rode their luck in the last half hour as the visitors hit the woodwork three times but just when the Brough felt that they had taken a point from the league leaders, Wiggington hit the winner in stoppage time.

Oli Riach was the Crown Inn Man of the Match.

Hemingbrough 2 v Post Office 3

Despite no wins now in 7 games, Manager Singh can still take plenty of encouragement out of this game as for the second week running, they out played the visitors for large periods of the game, but need to be more cynical in front of goal and keep switched on at the back.

Singh preparations for the match were dealt a major blow, with the news that Craig Hewitt had returned to Tate and Lyle in the transfer window. Craig had been a solid performer this season and we wish him well. Further to this Steve Milner was still suffering for an injury he picked up the week before and could only feature on the subs bench. This meant a recall for Matty Zak in the middle of defense alongside Man of the match Steve Harrison.

Singh asked his players for a fast and furious start and he got this as both Adi Wood and Craig Haythorne attacked down both wings with consummate ease. Wood rode 2 challenges before crossing into the area but both Danny Smith and Luke Zak had over run the ball. Moments later Haythorne went marauding down the right wing and his cross was volleyed over by Harry Jackson. It seem only a matter of time before the deadlock would be broke, but unfortunately it game against the run of the play as Post office delivery a sucker punch. A free kick was punched clear by Nathan Briggs and dropped to the feet of Danny Young, But with no one shouting that a man was on. Young had the ball stolen from him and duly lofted over Briggs head into the vacant goal. This rocked Hemingbrough and there passing game went out of the window for five minutes as they resorted to pumping the ball long, much to the dismay of Singh. The message got out and they finally settled again and go there just rewards seconds before half time when Harrison powered home a header for a well worked short corner.

Heminbgrough started the second half in positive mood and both Nick Brooks and Dave Young were using the ball intelligently with the later setting up the second goal. Young’s pin-point cross found Danny Smith who headed into the far corner to complete a sound comeback. It looked like this was going to be the first of many second half goals for the host as Smith, Luke Zak and Jackson all went close to adding to the lead.

Unfortunalty yet again Hemingrough switched off and duly allowed Post office to draw level. A hopeful put up field found the post office winger, who looked offside, the defence appealed for the offside but never carried on and play to the whistle. This made the task for the winger easier as he crossed the ball the unmarked striker who slotted home.

This spurred on the visitors and the game was very open now as both teams went for the win. The turning point in the game came with 25 minutes to go. Brooks cleared the ball but was taken out as a result of a very late challenge to the head. This resulted in Brooks having to leave the field suffering for head aches and blood shot eye. Unbelievably the referee chose to give a throw-in to the visitors. They in turn launched a long throw into the box which was dispatched by the striker.

This forced Singh to reshuffle his pack as he brought on Milner, Pearson and Singh to replace Haythorne, brooks and Mattie Zak and he changed to 3-5 -2 in a effort to get the vital goal back.

Spencer then broke free from the offside trap but his effort was rushed and as a result his effort went high and wide. Further chances were created by Singh and wood. But the visiting keeper showed great awareness in snuff out any potential danger.

After the game a philosophical Singh commented “we aren’t playing badly at the moment, we just need stayed focused for the full 90 minutes. It’s important that this run stops soon”.

With a starting formation including five strung across their midfield, Hemingbrough quickly stamped their authority on the game against the current League Leaders with the hosts penned back in their own half for long periods of the first half. The Brough were duly rewarded for their early supremacy when on 21 mins the home defence failed to clear a Kes Morris corner and Jon Falkingham stroked the ball home to give Hemingbrough the lead. The York side had the better of the early second half exchanges though Hemingbrough should have extended their lead when a dazzling run from Rupert Simpson left him with only the keeper to beat but he tamely shot straight into the keepers arms. Sloppy defending from Hemingbrough allowed Clarke, the Divisions leading scorer to equalise for York but within a minute they had the chance to regain their lead, straight from the re-start Morris surged into the visitors box only to be brought down but taking the resultant penalty himself, Morris saw his effort easily saved.

This inspired RI and only another class save from Tasker-Lynch denied them the lead. With pressure building on Hemingbrough they then conceded a penalty but the spot kick was blazed over the bar.

Hemingbrough started the New Year in a positive manner and in the end comfortably collected maximum points against their high flying visitors who probably felt that they were lucky only to concede three goals.

After a goalless first 45 mins in which the only notably effort was a Nathan Briggs header which was cleared off the line, the Brough flew out of their traps in the second period quickly taking the lead when Oli Riach threaded a ball through the Haxby back line which the speedy Craig Haythorne latched onto before casually placing the past the Haxby keeper. Co- Manager Mathew Wood shuffled his pack making a flurry of changes and all three subs made an immediate impact on the game, Aidey Wood fed Riach whose shot rattled against the upright and it seemed that the second goal was not far away. Kev Koziki shot was parried away by the Haxby keeper but Luke Zacharenko was on hand to bury the rebound home. Richie Collins then beat two defenders before bending the ball round the keeper but saw his effort cannon off the post. It was all Hemingbrough now, Zacharenko bagged his second of the game and then had a cheeky over head kick rattle the post , Haythorne and Collins shared the Man of the Match awards.

Hemingbrough finished the year with a deserved point away at Post Office against a vastly improving side who earlier in December, had beaten them in the York F A Cup 4-2.

Luke Zacharenko gave Hemingbrough the lead on 23 mins but they could only hold their advantage for 5 mins as Neil Holmes equalised for Post Office. The second half saw both sides create chances to take all the points but in the end a draw was a fair result.

Hemingbrough suffered their first league defeat of the season as they went down by a single goal to league leaders York RI.

The opening ten minutes saw Hemingbrough clearly on top and they were unlucky not to take the lead but Chris Caudwell’s fine solo effort went just wide. With the game relatively even the visitors were a tad fortunate to take the lead just on the stroke of half-time, a crisp volley from the edge of the area was parried away by Tasker-Lynch and York RI’s Aaron North followed up to score from close range. In the second period Hemingbrough did everything but score, including a Steve Irwin header which the home players thought was clearly over the line but not the Ref, and late on in the game they also had a penalty claim turned down. In the end the visitors held out but Hemingbrough have the distinction of been the last team (out of 89 in total) in the Leeper Hare league to relinquish their 100%. They also have an early opportunity to extract some revenge as the two sides meet again on the 6th January 2007

Chris Caudwell and Harry Jackson shared the Crown Inn Man of the Match award.

HAXBY LIONS 2 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 1

The lethal cocktail of Saturday night Christmas celebrations and a Sunday morning football match don’t bode well for a competitive game. A beleaguered bleary eyed Hemingbrough side travelled to Haxby on Sunday morning and upon reaching their destination realised they were without a recognised keeper, but Tom Bennett was somehow easily persuaded to don the gloves.

During the early period in which Hemingbrough were still looking for their footballing legs they found themselves two goals down, they did however find their second wind after the half hour mark and Adi Wood won a penalty which Harry Jackson clinically put it away. The second half saw Hemingbrough huffing and puffing but to no avail though they comfortably contained a Haxby side with Bennett producing a couple of outstanding saves

Hemingbrough’s disappointing run continued when they could only muster a point from their home fixture with a struggling Moor Lane side.

The visitors went in front after 10 mins following a well worked free kick but the home side hit back before the interval when Man of the Match Craig Hewitt released Luke Zacharenko who calmly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper. A long range effort from Dave Young gave Hemingbrough the lead and they then went further ahead with a diving header from Craig Hewitt. At this point Hemingbrough appeared to be in total control but two goals in as many minutes saw the visitors draw level and though in the remaining 14 mins Hemingbrough created chances to still take the game away from Moor Lane it was not to be.

Despite the lack of recent success Hemingbrough are fourth in the league table.

Sunday Morning League

 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 2 SKELTON 1

With last weeks disappointing defeat to lowly Shoulder of Mutton still fresh in the memory Hemingbrough were determined to produce an improved performance against second placed Skelton.

With Mathew Wood installed into his new role as co-manager, Hemingbrough started brightly and had a flurry of good chances spurned early into the game. They were duly punished for their failure to convert these chances when the visitors first attack of the game saw them take the lead, thumping the ball home from close range.

This just inspired Hemingbrough to lift their game into an even higher sphere and some great flowing football followed which resulted in a Luke Zacharenko free kick rattling the crossbar and Nathan Briggs, who caused the Skelton defence problems all game with his strength and enthusiasm, kneeing the ball onto the bar. Brough’s control and dominance eventually reaped rewards when the visitors No 6, under pressure from both Zacharenko’s, headed Aidey Woods corner into his own goal.

The hosts began the second half exactly as they had finished the first and the Referee’s Man of the Match Wood saw his effort just fizzing wide of the post but despite Hemingbrough’s territorial advantage it looked as though the visitors would pinch a point they had not deserved as the game entered into the final phase. With less than five minutes remaining a solid clearance from Dave Young was latched onto by the Players Man of the Match Craig Haythorne who eloquently side stepped two defenders before burying the ball into the bottom corner, to secure Hemingbrough’s fourth win from the last five games.

The First team have no game now until the 30th December but the Reserves currently lying third in Reserve C, entertain league leaders York R I and with both sides yet to be defeated in the league this season the game promises to be a real cracker. The Sunday side play their final game of the year when they visit Haxby Lions

Reports From Dec 2nd/3rd

The York F A Cup tie which was postponed last week due to a waterlogged pitch finally got under way last week-end but the elements played a major part in deciding which side progressed into the next Round. The visitors won the toss and elected to play with the wind and the sun at their backs and duly scored four times in the first half. After two consecutive defeats Richie Singh decided to ring the changes in an effort to change their fortunes, recalling Dave Tomlinson to the starting eleven and playing Harry Jackson and himself at right back and right wing respectively.

The visitors took the lead after 11 mins, a long wind assisted throw into the box was headed home leaving keeper Briggs helpless. They went two in front on 24 mins when a hopeful punt saw both central defenders losing the flight of the ball in the sun and the ball fell generously for the Post Office who scored easily. Despite these setbacks Hemingbrough were producing some scintillating football at times as Wood , Young and Crown Inn Man of the Match Craig Hewitt all found time and space on the ball to execute precision passes for the ever alert front pairing of Smith and Zacharenko. Just after the half hour mark the Hemingbrough’s efforts were rewarded when Adi Wood was crudely hacked down in the box and the ever-reliable Luke Zacharenko fired home the resulting penalty. A Danny Smith header was turned round the post only minutes later as the home side appeared to be getting on top and though an equaliser seemed on the cards the visitors snatched two further goals before the break. This rocked Hemingbrough but they battled on in the second half and Craig Hewitt pulled reduced the arrears when he headed home a Luke Zacharenko cross after the initial hard work was supplied by the energetic Harry Jackson.

Despite the score-line Manager Singh was still optimistic and could take plenty of positives from the game.

The Reserves maintained their 100% record with a 2-1 home win over Norwich Union. A Richard Ireland penalty gave Hemingbrough a first half lead which the versatile Mark Livsey, with a trade-mark volley, doubled before the visitors grabbed a late goal. Hemingbrough sit third in the table and with games in hand all the sides above them but the real test could be the game on the 16th December when they play league leaders York RI.

The Sunday sides recent revival was abruptly ended when they went down 5-1 at Shoulder of Mutton.

Reports from Nov 25th/26th

The heavy rain last week-end caused havoc to the Leeper Hare league Fixtures and York FA Cup games with more than two thirds of the games called off, including both Hemingbrough ‘s games. The weather and more importantly the pitch improved by late Saturday and Sunday morning allowing the Sunday side to complete their home fixture with Bishopthorpe.

 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 4 BISHOPTHORPE 3

Hemingbrough’s appalling start to the season is fading rapidly to the back of the memory as a confident and revitalised Hemingbrough side chalked up their third consecutive win.

Such is the change in their fortunes now that they even gifted their visitors a two goal advantage and whereas this would have finished up as a heavy defeat at the beginning of the season, this self-assured Hemingbrough side fashioned this into a meritorious victory.

Bishopthorpe took the lead with less than three minutes on the clock with a crisp half volley which gave Nick Brown no chance at all and they then doubled their lead within four minutes when they converted a penalty.

At this point Hemingbrough dusted themselves down and began to play football, they halved the deficit on 21 mins when Nathan “John Hartson” Briggs bagged his second goal of the season with a well placed shot. They were on level terms before the break when Aidey Wood sent a 50 yd pass over the top of the Bish’ back line for Luke Zacharenko to run onto and he coolly slotted the ball home and Wood then put his own name on the score sheet (though his shot may have taken the faintest of deflections on its way to the back of the net) after the inspirational Oli Riach worked the ball well onto the wing before supply the cross for Wood to finish.

Despite Hemingbrough’s dominance the visitors snatched an underserved equaliser when Brown did well to parry the ball away but Bishopthorpe followed up and managed to bundle the ball over the line. Lady Luck is certainly on Hemingbrough’s side recently and she appeared again when Aidey Wood’s cross-cum-shot deceived the keeper who then ended up pushing the ball over the line for what proved to be the winning goal.

Hemingbrough’s points tally to-date is now more than they totalled all last season.

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 0 TADCASTER ALBION 2

Despite starting in a confident mood and Hemingbrough’s wide players seeing plenty of the ball early in the game, the Brough slipped to a second consecutive home defeat.

Manager Richie Singh’s pre-match plans were thrown into disarray early into the game following the recurrence of a longstanding groin injury to Harry Jackson but the enforced changes had nothing to do with the fortuitous opening goal for Tadcaster. A mis-kicked clearance by Briggs fell at the feet of a Tadcaster forward and though his initial effort was brilliantly palmed away by Briggs the ball ricocheted off Matty Zacharenko into the unguarded goal.

The lack-lustre second half performance prompted substitutions but the game was put beyond Hemingbrough when Dave Young was adjudged to have committed a foul inside the box and Taddy made no mistake from the spot.

A well-organized Tadcaster side deserved to win on the day conceded Rich Singh after the game, who will consider all his options carefully, including the possible elevation from the Reserves for some players, before naming his side for this week-ends Cup-tie

RICCALL UTD RES 2 HEMINGBROUGH UTD RES 4

Hemingbrough, having not beaten their local rivals in any of their last four meetings, the most recent been last weeks Cup defeat, they were keen to redress the balance.

But matters quickly seemed to go from bad to worse, playing into a cold wind and the sun in their eyes Riccall were two up inside the first seven minutes, as Mark Pickard hit their first and made the second for Tom Bennett. Hemingbrough’s plight multiplied on just ten minutes when they were reduced to ten men as Tom Caudwell was inexcusably shown the red card for allegedly “foul and abusive language”. The remainder of the half was a stale affair, Riccall probably feeling that the job was done while Hemingbrough bemoaning that the mountain was to high to climb.

The interval enabled Hemingbrough to re-group as they realised that they would have the advantage of the elements and that one quick goal would bring them back into the game.

A revitalised Brough got their vital break through on 54 mins, the versatile Mark Livsey, this week playing at full back, produce a scintillating 50 yd pass over the home defence which the pacey Kes Morriss latched onto before lifting the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net. Hemingbrough’s tempo was visibly lifted by this goal and they were on level terms shortly afterwards as the industrious Chris Caudwell raced into the box only to be scythed down and Richard Ireland duly dispatched the penalty. Riccall responded but Carl Tasker-Lynch denied the home side with two brilliant saves.

With less than 15 minutes remaining Matty Aked could easily have settled for a point considering the events in the first 10 mins, but to his credit he drove his players forward and they responded accordingly. Leading by example Aked swung a free kick into the box straight onto the head of Dave Jackson whose powerful header was dropped by the keeper and in a flash Jackson had smashed the loose ball into the back of the net. In the dying minutes a nervous and shell-shocked Riccall defence played a back pass to their keeper which bobbled over his foot and rolled over the line for Hemingbrough’s fourth goal.

Richard Ireland was the Crown Inn Man of the Match but Manager Mat Aked was quick to applauded all his players for a fantastic win against the odds.

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 3 CUE BALL FULFORD 0

Hemingbrough recorded back-to-back league victories for the first time under the management of Mathew Zacharenko who believes the 3-5-2 formation that he has now adapted has been the key to their recent successes.

Starting where they left off last week Hemingbrough played with an air of confidence and got the early goal they wanted. Players Man of the Match Richie Collins played a pass inside for Kevin Kozicki who hit it first time and with the help of a tasty deflection, the ball looped over the visitors keeper. Hemingbrough’s defensive trio of Dave Young, Richard “Spooner” Ireland and Pete Minto comfortably snookered everything that the Fulford side could produce. The much needed two goal cushion arrived on the 44th minute and again included an ingredient that has been absent for much of their season, ie a slice of luck, though nothing should be detracted from Luke Zacharenko’s involvement in the goal, his pace, quick feet and turn and presence of mind created him the space and time to fire a shot into the “mixer” with the result that the ball cannoned off a defender and into the back of the net.

The win was secured mid-way through the second half when Richie Collins produced yet another inch perfect through ball, this time Nathan Briggs was the benefactor, as he ran onto a one-on-one with the keeper, with a drop of the shoulder from the big fella it looked as though he had rounded him but just as he was about to tap the ball into an empty net Briggs was rugby tackled to the ground. Luke Zacharenko maintained his impressive record of not missing from the penalty spot this season as he sent the keeper the wrong way to wrap up the scoring. For the third successive game Pete Minto was awarded the Referee’s Man of the Match

Reports form Nov 11th/12th

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 0 FULFORD UTD 1

Hemingbrough surrendered their 100% league record with a hapless display against what can only be described as “a moderate footballing side” but whose work rate was exemplarily.

It was a day when Mother Nature threw up some horrendous conditions as both teams fought against a bitterly cold November gale with intermittent driving rain and as a result the game was a very poor spectacle for the few brave soles and his dog that turned up to watch. The first half produced just one attempt in total on target and Nathan Briggs made the save look probably easier than it really was. The second half did not improve to any degree and Hemingbrough’s only chance of the day arrived in the closing minutes as Steve Milner out jumped the Fulford defence but then saw his effort crash against the bar and fall to safety. As the game moved into the added time phase the visitors threaded a perfectly weighted ball through the home defence but Matty Zacharenko read the situation and intercepted the ball but his clearance was charged down by Fulford’s Mike Tansey and the ball rolled slowly over the goal line despite the desperate efforts of Briggs.

The Crown Inn Man of the Match Award went to Dave Young. A disappointed Richie Singh fumed after the game that players had let themselves down after the hard work of the previous week’s but was realistic enough to admit that one bad result does not make or break the season

POCKLINGTON 3 HEMINGBRIOUGH UTD 5

At long last the Sunday side gained the result that some of their recent performances had warranted.

They went ahead after just 19 mins following an immaculate through ball from Luke Zacharenko which the speedy Aidie Wood ran onto before calmly slotting the ball right-hand corner of the goal. The home side drew level courtesy of a fortuitous free kick but Zacharenko playing to the Ref’s whistle, or lack of it, cut the ball back for Kevin Kozicki to fire home amid protests from the Pock defenders. Just before the interval Hemingbrough conceded another soft goal as the Pock striker totally mis-hit his shot sending Brown the wrong way.

Shortly after the re-start Hemingbrough were forced to make two changes as Harry Jackson appeared to be “shot” (but it turned out to be only a slight hamstring injury) and Kozicki was struggling with a shin injury but Hemingbrough still managed to regain their lead again when a pin-point Craig Haythorne cross was fired home by Luke Zacharenko. For the first time in the game, they managed to build a two goal cushion when another Haythorne cross was bundled over the line by Dave Young at the second or even the third attempt and with less than ten minutes remaining surely the game was put beyond any doubt when a bursting run from Referee’s Man of the Match Nathan Briggs created space for Haythorne to whip over another telling cross which super sub Mathew Wood met and confidently panted the ball in the back of the net.

Despite the heroics of the Players Man of the Match Pete Minto the hosts grabbed a late consolation goal but it could not stop Hemingbrough celebrating their first league win since 6th November 2005 and moved them out of the relegation zone.

YORK R I 0 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 1

Following a string of good results Hemingbrough went into this game knowing that it would be a hard task to maintain their 100% league record against a free scoring York R I side that were currently sitting on top of the Division Two league table.

Injuries to senior players Steve Harrison and Craig Hewitt disrupted Manager Richie Singh’s plans but it gave a starting place to Adi Wood and saw both Dave Tomlinson and Richie Collins on the bench.

The home side bossed the game early on and even had the ball in the net after 19 mins but the goal was disallowed for a foul on defender Matty Zacharenko. The pivotal point of the game arrived shortly afterwards, a well worked Craig Haythorne corner was met by Danny Young who saw effort hit the cross bar and the rebound was scrambled away. This lifted the tempo for Hemingbrough and they took the lead just moments later when Harry Jackson set Dave Young away down the right and his pin-point cross was headed home by a jubilant Adi Wood. Minutes later only the woodwork denied Luke Zacharenko from doubling their lead and it was all Brough at this stage.

A rare defensive error created a chance for the hosts but Nathan Briggs coolly collected the ball and instantly released Haythorne down the left who proved to be a threat for the York side all afternoon. In an attempt to salvage something from the game R I pushed another player forward and from a corner a goal-bound volley was cleared by a combination of Steve Milner and Matty Zacharenko.

Adi Wood took the Man of the Match accolade, but it was an excellent all round team performance with all 14 players contributing. The result could be put in perspective with that fact that it was the first time since season 2002-03 that York RI had failed to score in a home league fixture, a sequence stretching for over 40 games.

Hemingbrough Res made it three league wins from three games as they had little difficulty in overcoming Huby. The win pushed Hemingbrough into third spot in Reserve C just behind local rivals Riccall but, with games in hand. A hat-trick from Mark Livsey was highlight of the game with brothers Tom and Chris Caudwell completing the rout.

The Sunday side, despite leading 3-2 at the interval, went down to third placed Shipton 5-4.

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 1 NEW EARSWICK 0

After a mixed bag of results in various Cup competitions over the last three weeks it was back to the bread and butter stuff of league football and in particular the visit of New Earswick.

Hemingbrough had already played the York side on the opening week-end of the season and won 5-1 but the visitors included a number of fresh faces in their starting line-up whilst Hemingbrough with two players stranded at Prague Airport, and a couple of players unavailable were fielding a reshuffled side for the fifth consecutive game but did welcome back top-scorer Danny Smith and defender Matty Zacharenko.

It was the visitors that started strongly however and were only denied taking the lead by a brilliant Nathan Briggs save. The opening goal and what turned out to be the only goal of the game arrived on 21 mins when the irrepressible Adi Wood danced past three defenders and produced a pin-point cross which Danny Smith met with a powerful header. This should have been the platform for an improved performance but this failed to materialise as Hemingbrough struggled to make any telling impact on the game. Admittedly injuries either side of the break to Danny Young and Matty Zacharenko did not help their cause but only a trio of timely tackles from Nick Brookes and a locker full of saves from Briggs earned Hemingbrough their second successive league win

In the after-match post-mortem Player/Manager Richie Singh summed up the game when he said “when the keeper gets the Man of the Match award it tells you a lot about the game ”

GILBERDYKE RESERVES 1

HEMINGBROUGH UTD RES 4

A competent display for 80 mins was enough for Hemingbrough to book a number in the little, presumably velvet bag, when the East Riding Committee meet again to make the next round of the Cup draw.

During the other ten minute spell, at the start of the second half, Hemingbrough were lethargic, slow to start again after the break and gifted their hosts a goal, putting themselves under pressure.

Hemingbrough started the game in confident mode, knocking the ball about well and stretching the home side in all directions. The pacey Darrell Tate opened the scoring when he raced onto a through ball, rounded the keeper with a swagger before planting the ball into the empty net and before the break the athletic Tom Jackson utilised his speed and shrewdness to carve open the home defence again to double Hemingbrough’s advantage. The second half introduction of Mark Livsey brought Hemingbrough out of the doldrums after they had conceded the goal, a powerful clearance by keeper Tasker found Livsey who after controlling the ball in a flash picked his spot in the top corner of the goal and duly delivered the ball to the aforementioned position. The game and the tie was effectively over on 77 mins when Ashley Olsen opened his Brough account when he finished off a four man manoeuvre with a sweet volley past the hapless Gilberdyke keeper. The Crown Inn Man of the Match accolade was deservedly given to Tom Caudwell.

The Sunday side made an early exit from the York Central Cup following the defeat at Nestle Flag.

FILEY TOWN RES 2 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 0

Despite the return of the Great North Run participants Craig Hewitt and Steve Harrison it was another early cup exit for Hemingbrough from a game that they controlled for much of the 90 mins.

They should have taken the lead as early as the 10 minute mark after Adi Wood made progress down the flank but his inch perfect cross was wasted by player/manager Singh. Chances were created and wasted, Craig Haythorne and Luke Zacarenko both tested the keeper and with the home side under pressure, they resorted to long punts up field just to clear their lines. On 34 minutes one such punt caused chaos in the Brough defence and the home striker took advantage to open the scoring. This was totally against the run of play and a shell-shocked Hemingbrough side fell further behind following a poor clearance from a corner.

In the second half Hemingbrough were camped in their hosts half but failed to convert their superiority into goals and the chance of lifting the East Riding Cup evaporated for another year

WHITE HORSE CHURCH FENTON RES 0

A business trip to Spain deprived the Club of a number of regular players including Manager Matty Aked and Dave Jackson found himself taking over the reigns as the Reserves Manager.

Looking resplendent in their new kit, kindly sponsored by local business Fastfix Garage Doors and presented with a playing surface akin to Wembley in it’s hay day due to the hard work of Kev Jackson, Hemingbrough were looking for their first home win over the visitors in four seasons.

Shrewdly Dave Jackson adapted a system to suit the players available and included in their ranks Harry Jackson having his first outing of the season following injury Mike Young, Toby Swain and Crown Inn Man of the Match Steve Irvine were solid at the back. In a competitive opening half Hemingbrough just about edged it, and they deservedly took the lead three minutes before the break when a fierce header from Jon Falkingham was too hot to handle for the Fenton keeper and the ever alert Richard Ireland was on hand to poke the dropped ball into the net.

After the re-start White Horse were chasing the game which created gaps in their defensive cover and the cool Tom Caudwell exploited this when he threaded a through ball for Tom Jackson who finished the move with great composure to double the lead.

The scoring was completed 10 minutes later when the quick-thinking of Mathew Milburn released Harry Jackson, who lobbed the advancing keeper.

The Sunday side were defeated 4-0 at Haxby.

CIVIL SERVICE 4 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 3 AET

After a strong start to the season, Hemingbrough were given a reality check as they were knocked out of the League Cup at the first hurdle.

Singh was forced to reshuffle his pack due to himself, Craig Hewitt and Steve Harrison all unavailable for selection due to their participation in the Great North Run.

Hemingbrough struggled to settle early in the game and found themselves a goal down after just 15 mins, however this did create some spark into their play and they were level on 22 mins when a home defender turned the ball into his own net from a Craig Haythorne corner. Shortly afterwards Adi Wood was brought down in the box and Luke Zakerencko fired Hemingbrough in front from the penalty spot.

Manager Singh was then seething as his side easily conceded control of the game when two further defensive errors gifted the home side an undeserved 3-2 lead. In pursuit of an equaliser Steve Milner and Dale Shipley were both pushed forward and Shipley duly obliged three minutes from time when he bravely headed home a Wood cross. Even after that Hemingbrough had a chance to win the tie in normal time but the match went into extra time and yet another defensive error saw the home side take the tie.

Richie Singh after the game said “it was a below average performance and a disappointing result, they (Civil Service) had only 4 shots at goal and they all came from defensive mistakes, we must try to iron out these faults very quickly”

NORTH DUFFIELD DRAGONS 1 HEMINGBROUGH UTD RES 3

Hemingbrough Utd Res progressed into Round Two of the York FA Cup at the expense of local rivals North Duffield who were playing their first ever York FA Cup following their election to the York Leeper Hare League.

A bizarre couple of incidents prior to the ko resulted in the Reserves new kit, which was kindly donated by Fastfix Garage Doors, been left behind, and they then had to play in the Sunday side kit that had beenn collected by mistake.

After a tense and sometimes dour opening half hour, the deadlock was eventually broken when Richard Ireland was brought down in the Duffield penalty area and the Referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. “Spooner” took the kick himself and made no mistake. The home side were however level within six minutes due to some abject defending from Hemingbrough and the sides turned round on level terms. Jon Falkingham restored Hemingbrough’s lead on 68 mins and the Crown Inn Man of the Match, Richard Spooner, booked Hemingbrough’s place in the next Round with a sweet volley that flew into the top corner giving Dragons keeper Granville North no chance at all.

This week-end sees the First team having a day at the seaside, they have been drawn away at Filey Town Res in the East Riding Cup. The Reserves entertain Church Fenton White Horse in their first league match of the season. Matty Aked’s side will be keen to stop White Horse winning for the third consecutive time at Hull Road. The Sunday side are away at Haxby Lions.

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 7 KARTIERS RES 0

Ex—Kartiers Player and Club Secretary Richard Singh, now in charge at Hemingbrough, could afford a wry smile on Saturday evening as his new charges totally outplayed his old club and progressed into Round Two of the York FA Cup.

Kartiers, who have fallen at the first fence of this Cup Competition for the last two seasons, started at a frantic pace and registered the first notably effort of the game inside the first seven minutes when Paul Grundy was up-ended just outside the area. The resulting free kick was hit fiercely enough by Simon Winstanley but Nathan Briggs saved well and this proved to be the visitors only effort on target all game. The silky skills of Kartiers Gareth Rhodes were obviously highlighted as a potential match winner for the visitors but Steve Harrison and Dave Young both worked tirelessly to stifle out any danger.

The first goal arrived just after the quarter-of-an hour mark when Danny Smith went on a marauding run and was crudely brought down in the visitors box. Luke Zacharenko duly dispatching the penalty. The hosts doubled their lead on 32 mins when Adi Wood broke down the left and his cross was met by Smith who scored from an acute angle. At this point Kartiers resorted to the long ball game but this was easy pickings for the centre half pairing of Steve Milner and Matty Zacharenko. Four minutes from time the home side went further ahead when the Kartiers keeper fumbled a Haythorne cross and the Ref’s Man of the Match Danny Young was on hand to poke the ball home.

During the break Kartiers obviously decided to attempt to tie down Smith and Luke Zacharenko Hemingbrough’s lively forwards but this created more space on the flanks and Wood capitalised on this 10 minutes after the re-start when he was allowed to run 20 yds unchallenged before finishing with a thunderbolt into the top corner. Haythorne, voted the Players Man of the Match, created No 5 when his cross was met by Luke Zacharenko who calmly beat two defenders, waltzed round the keeper, before walking the ball into a vacant goal. Ten minutes from time Smith beat the off-side trap before firing the ball home and the rout was completed when Milner volleyed home after a corner was only partially cleared.

Hemingbrough Res did not have a game but the Sunday side went down 3-1 at Royal Charter in the East Riding Cup. Tom Bennett put Hemingbrough in front only for the Hull side to equalise and with two minutes remaining the home side were given a fortuitous penalty which was hotly disputed by Hemingbrough. The disagreements went on far too long and saw Hemingbrough reduced to 9 men. Royal Charter then added a late, late goal.

reports from weekend 16th/17th September

NEW EARSWICK 1 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 1st 5

It was all change at Hemingbrough as new Manager Richard Singh fielded no less than 5 new signings for the Brough’s first league game of the season away at New Earswick.

Despite putting together a run of 7 games without defeat at the end of last season the hosts were relegated from Division One and were looking for three early points against a Hemingbrough side without a win from their last four away games.

Within four minutes the home side were in front when Hemingbrough failed to clear the ball from a corner but this revitalised Brough side restored parity within just three minutes. Steve Milner won the ball in his own half before releasing Spencer Pearson who broke down the right, bamboozled three defenders before squaring the ball back to a surprised but grateful MILNER who volleyed home to score on his debut.

Hemingbrough were knocking the ball around with consummate ease and when the Crown Inn Man of the Match Luke Zackarenko had his powerful effort palmed away the ever alert Danny Smith was on hand to tap the ball into the vacant net. Before the break Hemingbrough extended their lead further when Smith headed home after great work from Steve Harrison.

The second half was totally Hemingbrough and it seemed to be only a matter of time before they added to their goal tally, Craig Hewitt and Adi Wood both went close before Luke Zackarenko charged down a clearance before advancing into the New Earswick area. Showing maturity beyond his years he drew the keeper out before calmly squaring the ball to an ecstatic Smith to complete his hat-trick

With the game seemingly won Manager Singh made three substitutions and all were instrumental in the final goal, Nick Brooks sent a searching long ball to the athletic Dale Shipley who in turn delivered a defence splitting cross which Craig Haythorne nonchalantly volleyed to Wood who then lobbed the keeper to finish off a great team move.

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 2nd 2 FULFORD UTD RES 3

The two league games last season between these two sides were close affairs and this Reserve League Cup First Round tie followed the same pattern.

A majestic header from Dave Jackson had brought Hemingbrough level after the visitors had opened the scoring but before the interval the visitors had regained their lead. In the second period Fulford extend their lead before the usually reliable Tom Caudwell squandered an opportunity from the penalty spot to pull a goal back. With ten minutes remaining Pete Foxley reduced the arrears but Fulford held on to claim the win.

ACOMB CELTIC 6 HEMINGBROUGH UTD sunday 2

A late call of nature forced a very late reshuffle to the Hemingbrough side and they found themselves two goals down inside the first 20 mins. Kev Koziki halved the deficit on 31 mins but the home side restored their two goal cushion before the break. Acomb added three further goals before Nathan Briggs scored five minutes from time. The Crown Inn Man of the Match went to Dave Young

Update from weekend 18th March

SHERIFF HUTTON 7 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 3

For the second successive year Hemingbrough ‘s interest in the League Cup finished at the Quarter-final stage and just as last year they were beaten by the better side on the day.

Admittedly Hemingbrough feel that they were denied two clear penalties within the first quarter of an hour but that said, their conversion rate at that particular discipline of the game is far from impressive –one scored from the last three attempts. By half-time Hemingbrough had left themselves a mountain to climb, trailing by three goals but still felt that the game could be saved. They started brightly after the re-start, Smith and Singh combining well and Man of the Match Woods looked dangerous down the left. But in the space of about ten minutes the hosts had scored two excellent goals to effectively kill the tie. A life line, albeit only very thin, was however thrown to Hemingbrough when a home defender handled the ball on the line and was shown a red card and Singh converted the penalty, within minutes Hemingbrough were awarded another penalty but missed the target and shortly afterwards Smith deservedly got his name on the score sheet but any hopes of an amazing comeback were quickly snuffed out as the home side added another couple of quality goals before Caudwell found the bottom corner for the second time in as many games.

STILLINGTON RES 2 HEMINGBROUGH UTD RES 1

Hemingbrough’s poor away form continues to bemuse Manager Bob Mathews and has seen his sides chances of taking the Reserve C title totally disappear.

The home side opened the scoring just after the half hour mark when Hemingbrough failed to clear a corner from the right and a lucky bounce gifted them the lead from close range.

Birch and Falkingham worked hard in midfield to keep the Brough in the game in the second period and Birch was unlucky to see his long range effort only saved at the second attempt by the home keeper. Hemingbrough felt aggrieved on 71 mins when they felt they should have had a penalty but the Ref ignored their claims and to make matters worse Stillington immediately scored at the other end. Feeling had done by Hemingbrough could have no complaints five minutes later when a Hemingbrough defender brought down a home forward for a clear penalty but the Match official ignored the claims of the home said this time. In the dying second of the game Edwards found Man of the Match Pearson who volleyed home confidently from 15 yds out.

 from Sat 11th March

MOOR LANE 4 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 3

For the sixth time this season Hemingbrough suffered the frustration of losing by the odd goal but this latest defeat was more galling because Hemingbrough were leading before the interval 3-1. Having found their scoring form at last they were let down by a defence which has been their rock for most the season.

The game was just 4 minutes old when Jackson was brought down in the box but the resulting penalty kick was tamely struck and the home keeper had no difficulty in making the save. However, they did take the lead on 16 mins when Danny Smith opened the scoring and within 5 mins they had doubled their lead when Wood cut inside and the keeper could only parry the ball to the eager and alert Smith who side footed the ball home from close range. Poor defensive covering gifted the home side a goal but Hemingbrough responded quickly and restored their two goal advantage when Chris Caudwell scored his 1st goal of the season when he rifled the ball into the bottom corner. An injury to Shipley before the half-time whistle forced changes to the back four and Moor Lane managed to score twice amid the dis-organisation.

The second half saw the Referee make crucial decisions which ultimately cost Hemingbrough dearly, he sent a player off from each side following a minor altercation which left the Hemingbrough player losing blood from a gashed eye and the second decision was the validity of Moor Lane’s fourth and winning goal. In the closing stages Crown Inn Man of the Match Danny Smith was denied a hat-trick by the width of the upright and Hemingbrough were left to wonder what might have been.

Weekend 4th March

After an impulsive snow storm on Friday afternoon only 6 Leeper Hare games in total survived for the Saturday Fixture list and it was not surprising that both fixtures for the Hemingbrough sides were included in the postponed column and in respect of the league positions of both sides we have a status quo.

This week-end the First team are in a must win win situation as they travel away to fellow strugglers Moor Lane in the proverbial six pointer. That said, the record is good against this opposition, having already chalked up two wins against Moor Lane this season, 2-0 in the league and 3-2 in the Cup and to add to that Hemingbrough won the corresponding fixture last season also with a 3-2 score-line in Hemingbrough’s favour. A defeat would not be the end of the world but would mean their Division Two status would be that much harder to retain. The Reserves have a free week and no doubt they will be looking for the results from the sides involved in the promotion battle which I disagree with my learned friend from up the A19, but would I would not include the Riccall result in that category, at least for this season.

Match report for weekend Feb 25/26th

Last week-ends first team fixture at home to Selby RSSC became an early casualty of the heavy rain over the previous few days and was accordingly postponed. With Barmby Moor all but relegated, the battle to avoid joining them involves probably six sides including Hemingbrough and Selby RSSC. Both local sides can boast the best goal difference of all the teams fighting against the drop which may be important by the end of next month and Brough’s goals against figure is only bettered by the two sides that top the Division. The one result last Saturday which went in favour of both sides was the defeat of fellow relegation candidates Moor Lane. .

RICCALL UTD RES 2 HEMINGBROUGH UTD RES 1

Hemingbrough’s away form continues to be a thorn in their side as they dropped three more vital points in their quest for promotion but on the day the better side probably just edged it.

The uneven heavy pitch ruled out attractive football and Riccall were quicker into their stride and looked as though they wanted the game more than Hemingbrough. It was no surprise therefore that the hosts took the lead inside the first quarter of an hour. A cross from the left was met by Ashley Olsen who netted with a low fierce drive. Riccall squirmed a couple of chances of extending their lead before Hemingbrough created their first real opportunity of scoring but Morrison headed just wide after finishing off a Birch-Foxley move.

On 67 minutes Riccall did double their lead when Peter Minto finished a 3-man Riccall move with an unstoppable shot into the top corner. In the dying minutes Mike Young headed home from a corner for his first goal of the season but for Hemingbrough it was too little too late. With just four games remaining it is difficult to see Hemingbrough taking the title without collecting a maximum haul from all their games, starting at York RI on Saturday. The Crown Inn Man of the Match award was deservedly given to Daz Tate

.

SHIPTON 2 HEMINGBROUGH 0

Against pre-season favourites and top of the table Shipton . Hemingbrough produced a laudable display and had the Match official seen a number of incidents from possibly another angle he may well have opened up a number of scoring chances for Hemingbrough, via the 12 yd spot kick.

Shipton took the lead on 10 mins and added a second an hour later, while Hemingbrough, who also had the ball in the net twice but both were dis-allowed, were left wondering what might have been.

Dave Young and Jeremy James shared the Man of the Match accolades.

Match report for weekend Feb 18/19th

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 1 YORK RI 1

For the first time this season Manager Paul Young had a fully fit squad to choose from and it was no coincidence that for the first time this season the team showed the form which won promotion last season.

Hemingbrough controlled the game for long periods against a side currently enjoying an unbeaten run of six games but a team showing a liking for the physical side of the game. Smith, back to his lively best, was only denied goals by two outstanding saves from the York keeper, and It was somewhat surprising to see the game reaching the halfway point and still waiting for the first goal of the game,

The deadlock was broken early into the second half when Smith was hauled down in the box and Singh, who had been showing his true class all afternoon, stepped up to put away the resulting penalty. The York side rallied after this set back but found a solid Hemingbrough defence but with nine minutes remaining drew level with a fortuitous goal. A long throw into the Brough box was completely miss hit by a visiting forward and the ball went between two defenders and just sneaked into the corner past a stranded Briggs. It was the visitors that left the pitch the happier side, knowing that they had taken a point from a game that their opponents had deserved to win but Hemingbrough can take much credit with their performance and look forward to more reward in the not to distant future .

NORWICH UNION RES 1 HEMINGBROUGH UTD RES 1

Hemingbrough showed within the opening minutes of this top-of table battle their intentions and stunned their hosts by taking the lead with less than two minutes on the clock.

Ozzi Falkingham picked out Foxley with a long telling ball down the left who in turn controlled the pass in an instant before turning, looking up and with a delicate chip over the defence, laid on the perfect ball for Rupert Simpson who cleverly beat the keeper with a lob to register his ninth goal of the season. Hemingbrough certainly had the upper hand in the opening half hour and could have doubled their lead when a Birch free kick into the box created panic for the Norwich defence and the loose ball should have been despatched into the back of the net. Norwich drew level on 38 mins when from their second corner the ball was not cleared out of the area and Milburn was given no chance from 10 yds out.

The second half saw both sides cancelling each other out On 71 mins Hemingbrough were doubly lucky not to be punished for the same incident, firstly

Milburn, just as he did only last week handled the ball outside the area but again was lucky to stay on the field and the resulting free kick presented their forward with a free header 6 yds out but he placed it well over the bar. A draw was a satisfying result at fellow promotion contenders and fully deserved.

HEMINGBROUGH 1 SHOULDER OF MUTTON 1

A makeshift Hemingbrough side continued the week-end trend for the Club with another 1-1 draw.

Young Zacharenko showed maturity beyond his years when he put Hemingbrough in front with an excellent finish after a goal-less first half but they should have taken all the points had they not missed a penalty 18 mins from time. A lapse in concentration, five minutes from time allowed the visitors a late equaliser and deny Hemingbrough a win that their general play fully deserved.

.

This week-end both Saturday sides are involved in derby games, the First team entertain Selby RSSC while the Reserves make the short trip up the A19 to Riccall. On Sunday Hemingbrough are away at Shipton. Andy the affable Bar man at the Crown Inn drew the numbers of 15-30 and 38 but with no winners this week-ends jackpot is £100.

Hemingbrough F.C.

John Smiths Sunday Morning League- Division 2 15/01/2006

Hemingbrough F.C. V Haxby Lions at Hemingbrough

The Sunday side started its first game of the New Year hoping to improve on 2005.

Things started well when “boro” opened the scoring within seconds of the kick off with a 30-yard screamer!

A mistake by defender Matt Aked led to a Haxby Lion’s equaliser.

Tom Bennett scored direct from a corner (with a slight suspicion of an own goal) to give “boro” the lead again at 2-1.

A parried save from the boro keeper fell to the Haxby striker bring the score back to 2-2.

The fifth goal of the first half was a mirror of the previous goal to end the first half 2-3 I the away teams favour.

The second half started with two enforced substitutions by the “boro” manager, then a fumble by the Haxby keeper allowed Harry Jackson to equalise bringing the score to 3-3.

Jackson then went off injured leaving Hemingbrough down to 10 men.

The depleted home side held out till 10 minutes before the end till a deflected shot by the Haxby striker gave the away side the lead and subsequent 3 points.

But it could have all been different had Jack Bennett put away a sitter in the dying seconds of the game.

Man of the match went again to the excellent Steve Harrison

Next Sunday 22/01/2006 sees Hemingbrough at Home again to “The Cue Ball” from Fulford.

Match reports from Saturday 17th December

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 4 FULFORD UTD 5

The festive cliches are far to obvious to totally ignore following this inept display, especially in the final phase of the game when Hemingbrough, apparently cruising and 4-2 in front and looking to extend their unbeaten run to four games, were totally mystified when three wise men from Fulford each put the ball in the Hemingbrough net in the space of 480 seconds as the hosts gift wrapped three points for the opponents. Sorry !!

Admittedly Hemingbrough were “hampered” with star players missing due to the festive season and long term injuries and had to start the game with a couple of players not totally match fit. It was possibly why the scrappy game did not come to life until the 20th minute when a high cross into the home box saw keeper Briggs impeded and the ball run loose to a Fulford striker to score with ease. Hemingbrough were level within five minutes when Man of the Match Dave Young rifled home a 25 yd free kick into the bottom corner.

Fulford regained the lead but Hemingbrough were fortunate to draw level relatively quickly, the diminutive Richie Collins looped a header over the keeper and the ball rolled over the line off the post, or did it, even a Russian linesman would have queried this one. The goal stood and just before the break the hard working Adie Wood gave Hemingbrough the interval lead when he slotted home from a Young cross. Dave Young made it 4-2 early into the second half when he volleyed home from a Wood corner and both Smith and Singh went close to extending the lead even further. Hemingbrough looked to have won the game despite a generally poor performance but then Fulford supplied their own cracker in the final embers of the game. The one shining light for Hemingbrough was the development of Nick Brooks who had his best game yet in a Brough shirt.

As Ouseburns First team game had been called off earlier in the day they took the opportunity to include a sprinkling of First team players in the Reserve fixture. Daryl Tate picked up an early injury and with numbers sparse on the ground the options were limited for Manager Bob Mathews. Richard Dwight, currently the fourth top scorer in Division One netted one of Ouseburns goals in their 5-2 win with Rupert Simpson scoring both Hemingbrough’s goals.

There are no fixtures for any of the Club sides until the 7th January 2006.

 reports from Saturday 10th December

Selby BRSA 0 v Hemingbrough United 2

Hemingbrough retured back to winning ways with this vital victory against a strong BRSA side. The opening moments of this local derby were typically fast and frantic, with both midfield trying to stamp their authority on the game. Although Hemingbrough settled down to their game plan the quickest, it was the home side that looked more likely to score, and should have done better when striker Paul Stephenson broke free from the Hemingbrough defence, but his timid effort went aimlessly pass the post with only the keeper to beat. Moments later Gareth Rhodes broke down the right wing, but this time the effort was brilliantly saved by Boro keeper Nathan Briggs. These two near misses Kick started Hemingbrough into action but a freak injury was to joilt their progress. Defender David Tomlinson clashed with Keeper Briggs in what seem like a clumsy trip, But Tomlison was taken to hospital with what turned out to be a broken wrist. Tomlinson's replacement Richie Collins came on to play his first game of the season and got straight in the thick of the action with some great wing play.

Hemingbrough broke the deadlock when a James Taylor cross was flicked on by Danny Smith and the ever alert Harry Jackson volley home from close range. This seemed the spur the visitors on and between them, Richie Collins and Adi Wood had the Bras defense on the back foot for the remainder of the half.

In weeks gone past Hemingbrough would have let this lead slip, as for some reason they have self destructed after the interval on numerous occasions this season. Not today though, they showed great effort in chasing down any lose ball and It wasn't to long before they had double their lead. Chris Cauldwell went on a marauding run and his cross cum shot was turned over the bar for a corner. The resulting corner was floated in the box by Dave Young and Smith again rose to flick the ball on, where Danny Young volley home. Brase were now struggling to make a impact on the game and they pushed a defender up front for the final 15 mins. This suited Hemingbrough as Brasa Arial bombardment on the Hemingbrough defence, was duly snuff out by Dave Young and Nick Brooks, with great help from Peter Foxley.

 from Sat 3rd & Sunday 4thDec

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 1st team 3 CIVIL SERVICE 3

A player sent off from each side changed the course of this game as Hemingbrough, apparently coasting at 3-1 in front, conceded two late goals and threw away two valuable points.

Hemingbrough did not allow the heavy pitch to stop them playing open attractive football and as early as the 2nd minute Danny “Crouch” Smith put a Wood cross just the wrong side of the upright. However they did not have to wait long before the opening goal, Jackson fed Wood on the right and his cross was turned into his own net by a visiting defender who was under pressure from the presence of Caudwell. The pendulum was certainly swinging to Hemingbrough’s advantage and they doubled their lead when after a succession of three corners the ball was only partially cleared to Danny Young whose 18 yard volley found the back of the net.

It was looking to be a good day for the home side when Danny Smith ended a run of seven league games without a goal when a hammered home a Wood cross to extend Hemingbrough’s lead even further, but the three goal cushion was short-lived, with just two minutes of the half remaining a poor Briggs clearance fell to a Civil Service forward whose sweet return volley flashed past the dismayed keeper.

Just after the hour mark Taylor was sent crashing to the ground just outside the box and the result of the ensuing melee was that the Referee red carded a player from both sides. Civil Service appeared to adapt to 10-side game much better than Hemingbrough and they soon reduced the deficit from a corner and drew level with just three minutes to go. Peter Foxley on his First team debut was the Crown Inn Man of the Match and as for Danny Smith, well last season it took him four games to open his account, - five this campaign – but he then went onto to average almost a goal per game for the rest of the season.

LNER BUILDERS RES 3 HEMINGBROUGH RES 3

Looking for their fourth win on the trot a depleted Hemingbrough side travelled to York with Manager Bob Mathews as their only sub. They paid the penalty for their slow start to the game as a the Builders opened the scoring with a free kick which was poorly defended. Hemingbrough gradually began to create chances, firstly Caudwell saw his fine effort well saved by the keeper and then Livsey was inches wide with a long range effort. The equaliser however came when Simpson was brought down and Livsey took the responsibility of the free kick and made no mistake with his trusty left foot. On 31 mins the Builders should have re-taken the lead when they were awarded an obvious penalty but Milburn made a spectacular save to his left to deny them and just before the break Ozzi Falkingham’s long ball found Livsesy who played a one two with Caudwell before beating the keeper on his near post. Their fortuitous advantage disappeared within ten minutes of the re-start as they conceded two goals and keeper Milburn collected an injury forcing veteran Mathews into action for the last 20 mins. Within minutes of his substitution Mathews was called into action and produced a full stretch save (just like he used to do all those years ago) from a Builders free kick. With time ticking away Hemingbrough were pushing forward in desperation and were duly rewarded when Matty Aked ‘s hopeful long ball found Crown Inn Man of the Match Livsey who was denied his ‘trick only by a goal line clearance which went out for a corner. Birch whipped the corner over and Tate, six yards out forced the ball over for a deserved point.

Reports from Sat 26th & Sun 27th November

HEMINGBROUGH UTD RES 5 HEWORTH RES 2

Hemingbrough consolidated their position just behind the league leaders Ouseburn with their third win in as many weeks, and against a Heworth side that had beaten them earlier in the season.

Hemingbrough got off to a flying start, no sooner had the Ref blown his whistle to start the game when a ball over the visiting defence found Livsey free on the edge of the box. Head down he gained a further ten yds before driving the ball to the right of the keeper to open the scoring. Within three minutes they had doubled their lead, a cross field ball from Caudwell found Livsey who produced a carbon copy of his first goal. The lead was extended further before the break when Livsey, hungry for more goals forced a corner on 28 mins. Scott Birch floated over a perfect corner which the keeper could only parry to Foxley whose shot was handled on the line and Tom Caudwell made no mistake from the penalty spot.

The second half saw Heworth still under constant pressure and Hemingbrough were now dominating the game totally. They increased their tally when Rupert Simpson added a fourth and Scott Birch volleyed home number five. Hemingbrough, with thoughts now focussed on the nights celebrations then conceded two very late goals. With the news that League Leaders Ouseburn had been beaten at home – the gap is just 4 points but Hemingbrough have a game in hand- should have set up an great night for the side on the trip to Stainforth’s Dog Track.

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 0 DERWENT UTD 6

Hemingbrough may have bowed out of the John Smiths Cup at the Quarter–final stage but the score-line certainly flattered the high flyers from the top Division in the League. After the game the Malton based side were quick to acknowledge that they had been stretched through-out the game and that the final score did not reflect Hemingbrough’s contribution to the game.

The visitors scored three times in each half but in between the goals the Derwent keeper produced an array of excellent saves to preserve a clean sheet.

The first team are at home on Saturday to Civil Service while the Reserves travel to York to play LNER Builders.. The Sunday side are also in York this week-end as they are due to play York Nomads.

The Sunday side had one of those mornings they will want to quickly forget. A precise of the events would include two of the players crashing into each other in their vehicles, two caught speeding and a heavy defeat. The one highlight been Tom Bennett;s 30 yard screamer of a goal. Credit though to the eight who managed to get there and play. Richard Sykes and Joe Thompson shared the Man of the Match mantle.

Reports from Sat 19th & Sun 20th November

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 2 MOOR LANE 0

Having already beaten Moor Lane just a few weeks ago it was a confident Hemingbrough side that took the field for what proved to be an entertaining match with action at both ends of the pitch.

Manager Paul Young was forced to reshuffle the pack with both James Taylor and Richard Singh missing, and this gave first recalls to Nick Brooke and Danny Smith. The game was 20 minutes old when “Morris” fed Wood down the right wing and continued his run before receiving a wonderfully weighted return ball which he then drilled into the back of the net to open the scoring. Inspired by this lead Hemingbrough controlled the next phase of the game and Smith, Wood and Harry “tippy” Jackson all tested the visiting keeper severely. However Moor Lane were never really out of the game at this stage and were breaking quickly but found Crown Inn Man of the Match Nathan Briggs in excellent form.

The second half saw the visitors applying more pressure but the Brough’s defense of Young, Brooke, Zacharenko and Tomlinson almost past the test with flying colours, the odd exception been when they allowed a shot from the visiting striker and though his effort beat Briggs it hit the upright and the keeper gratefully collected the rebound. The game and the points were wrapped up on 76 mins, the strong running of Wood who had tormented Moor Lane all afternoon was unceremoniously scythed down by the last defender on the edge of the box and the imperturbable Lee Ward dispatched the resulting free kick into the back of the net.

CIVIL SERVICE RES 1 HEMINGBROUGH RES 4

Having already beaten Civil Service First team in a York F A Cup tie earlier this season the Reserves were confident they could register their first away win in seven attempts.

This confidence was fully justified as they took early control of the game, Foxley been desperately unlucky not to open the scoring within five minutes. They did not however have to wait very long but were a little fortunate, Scott Birch burst through the mid-field and tried his luck with a long range effort which the home keeper totally mis-read and to his surprise the ball managed to roll over the line. Within minutes Dave Jackson set up Falkingham but his shot went just inches wide.

Five minutes into the second half Foxley scored his second goal in as many games when the home keeper –not having his best game – dropped a Tate shot which Foxley tucked away from close range. Mark Livsey was introduced for the injured Foxley and he was quick to add his name to the score sheet. Edwards on the left found Livsey 18 yds out and his turn and left footed shot was pure poetry in motion. Twenty minutes to go, Livsey won a corner which Birch floated over for Jonathon Falkingham to produce an unstoppable header to make it 4-0 and the first time they had hit four goals on their travels since beating Riccall last February.

In the dying minutes the home side snatched a late consolation goal but the game was won and the points push Hemingbrough into second spot in the league table.

Mike Young was the Crown Inn Man of the Match

HEMINGBROUGH UTD 1 BURNHOLME 2

For the first 45 minutes of this game Hemingbrough put in below par performance against a side struggling in the league table and found themselves two goals down by the interval.

The half-time talk from Manager Matty Zacharenko managed to lift the tempo and the tactical changes he employed during the second half did reduce the deficit – Tom Bennett scoring the goal – but Hemingbrough missed enough chances only to share the points but could have won the game themselves. Steve Harrison put in his standard masterly performance and won the plaudits for the Crown Inn Man of the Match Award.

The first team have a free week but the Reserves entertain Heworth Reserves and will be looking to consolidate their lofty league position and looking to avenge the 1-0 defeat at the hands of Heworth earlier this month.

On Sunday Hemingbrough are at home to Derwent Utd in a Sunday Cup tie..

Stephanie Ireland started the Lottery Machine on Sunday evening but no winners matched the numbers of 16-33-40, .so the jackpot for this week-end is £150.

From Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th November

SHERIFF HUTTON 3 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 1

After their long overdue absence from League football Hemingbrough’s first fixture saw them away to last season’s Division Three Champions Sheriff Hutton for an epic encounter.

It was, in it’s true sense, “a game of two halves”, the first 45 minutes belonged to Hemingbrough whilst the hosts had the upperhand during the second period, but while Hemingbrough managed only a single goal in their dominating period Sheriff Hutton responded with three in theirs , albeit a tad lucky three goals.

Hemingbrough took the lead after only three minutes, Wood slotted a through ball for Richard Singh who rifled the ball home with some panache, scoring for his third consecutive league game. For the remainder of the half Jackson and Young controlled the middle of the park but Hemingbrough squandered enough chances to have had the game won before the break.

The second half started with two quick goals - one for each side – but both were disallowed, though surprisingly Harry Jackson claims he was on-side when he scored !!!!

The home side levelled just after the hour when a hopeful lob fell luckily into the path of Newton, their top goal scorer, who scored from close range, eight minutes later they took the lead when a cross was caught in the wind and the ball gracefully floated into the top corner giving keeper Briggs no chance at all. The win was confirmed two minutes from time when Sheriff Hutton hit their third.

BISHOPTHORPE 6 HEMINGBROUGH UTD 2

A disastrous opening half hour saw Hemingbrough concede four very sloppy goals in this John Smiths Sunday Morning League game.

That level of damage takes some recovering from, but Hemingbrough did at least start the second half positively and two spectacular goals from Harry Jackson and a courageous performance from Jeremy James instilled a glimmer of hope and belief that a minor miracle was on the cards. This glimmer was finally snubbed out twelve minutes from time when the home side hit two late goals to over emphasis their wining margin.

HEMINGBROUGH RES 2 HUBY UTD 1

After last weeks disappointing result, the Reserves bounced back with an excellent performance and result, though the result probably does not reflect Hemingbrough’s superiority of the game.

Peter Foxley scored his first goal of the season when he opened the scoring on 34 mins and though Huby equalised on 67 mins, Siddique hit the deserved winner 12 minutes from time. It was Hemingbrough’s third 2-1 win from their last four homes games.

This week-end the First team entertain Moor Lane in a League Fixture, having already beaten them in a Cup tie last month, while the Reserves are away at Civil Service, both games ko at 2-00pm. On Sunday, Hemingbrough are at home to Burnholme ko 10-30am.

Mark Livsey started the lottery Machine on Sunday evening but the numbers of 08-21-27 did not produce any winners so the jackpot for this week-end is £100-00.
